Hi John, no, the article isn't suggesting you should only have one fund. The article is based on the idea that most index funds provide a well rounded investing option at a fraction of the operational cost of most managed mutual funds, which often have much higher management fees, and may or may not offer returns that are better than index funds. Since you are at such an important part of your life, I think it would be a good idea for you and your wife to visit with a financial planner to set a financial plan for retirement. A planner can help you better understand your investment options and help you tailor a retirement plan that will help you achieve your goals. Our sister site has an article on how to hire a financial planner. I hope this information helps.

I presently have $328K in my IRA. I will be drawing an income from the IRA in 3 years. I presently own several different mutual funds but would like to invest in just one or two funds. 5% a year is enough income from the IRA for my wife and I. I have a pension + social security. Is the above article suggesting that I could invest all my money in one fund?

I find the fact that an author of a finance book would say mutual funds are too hard to understand worrisome.
