Defense Finance Accounting Service recently announced the schedule that DFAS will release W-2s and other military tax forms, including Retiree Account Statements (RAS), Retiree 1099R and Annuitant 1099R forms, Form 1095 health insurance verification forms and other related tax forms.
The dates are staggered, so we have a list below covering the release dates. Tax forms for 2023 will be released starting mid-December 2023 and will continue through January 2024.
DFAS customers with myPay access will be able to retrieve their tax statements electronically up to two weeks sooner than those relying on regular mail delivery. This is good for those who want to file their taxes early and receive their refunds as soon as possible.
DFAS also encourages all customers to elect to receive digital tax forms because it is safer, faster and more secure than relying on the mail system. Digital tax forms are also a must for those who frequently travel or expect to be deployed during tax season.

What About the Mailing Dates?
In previous years, DFAS also posted specific dates they anticipated these forms to be mailed. This year, DFAS has released only one date for those who elect to have tax statements mailed to their homes. DFAS states, “Tax statements sent through the U.S. Postal Service will be mailed no later than Jan. 31, 2024.”
However, DFAS recommends that everyone choose to receive their tax forms electronically, as they are available earlier and more securely than mail delivery. This also reduces the risk of identity theft.
myPay Security and Other Features
myPay Is Secure
myPay is a secure, web-based pay information system. One of the many benefits of this system is avoiding risks associated with identity theft. myPay has a series of security measures, with layers of defense against identity theft. The secure technology provided to myPay customers meets or exceeds security requirements used by private corporations worldwide.
Tax Statement Availability
The tax statements available through myPay are approved for use by the IRS and have several added benefits for myPay users. One is the ability to retrieve your military tax forms directly from myPay at any time during the year. The statements remain online to allow customers to view and print whenever it is convenient for them. This is especially important for service members who are TDY or deployed during the tax season.
Keep in mind that military members may be eligible for a free automatic tax extension if they were deployed during the previous year or during the current tax season. Be sure to read up on the details. And even though the extension is automatic, it’s a good idea to file for an extension to get it on the books with the IRS.
myPay Limited-Use Passwords
Another great feature is the use of restricted-access PINs, which allows users to have other family members, tax preparers or other trusted individuals view and print their tax statements without the ability to change any payment account information. The restricted-access PIN can be established after logging into a customer’s myPay account. For more information, see the FAQs on the myPay site.
Keep Permanent Copies of Your Military Tax Forms
Even though myPay stores a long-term copy of your military pay and tax forms, it’s always a good idea to keep permanent copies of your W-2s, 1099s, 1095s, leave and earning statements or retiree account statements and related forms. myPay does a good job of keeping an online repository of these forms, but technical issues have been known to happen. As with all military records, it’s a good idea to keep a permanent copy of your tax forms and other important documents.

As an US Air Force retiree, I have not received my 1099-R in the mail yet. Today is Feb 2, 2024. There used to be a law where they had to be received in the mail by the end of January. Guess that has changed along with the postage increases
Ryan Guina says
Will, I believe organizations are required to mail them by January 31st. Either way, you should be able to log into your account to access your 1099-R. If not, contact DFAS customer for assistance. Best wishes!

Hello Linda,
I’m sorry to hear you haven’t received your W-2 yet. I don’t know where you can get it, other than from AAFES. I would try finding different points of contact, such as different phone numbers or email addresses. It’s possible some employees may be working remotely and may be able to help you even if the main office is closed. Otherwise, you may have to wait until their office reopens.
Best wishes!
