Whether you’re training for a fitness test or just looking for a place to blow off some steam, there are a lot of affordable fitness options available to service members.
Active duty service members have access to your base’s fitness center, which should at least feature cardio and weight training options. Larger installations may offer more, such as free pools, basketball courts, and running tracks.
If you’re at a smaller installation, in the reserves or National Guard, or you travel a lot, you might be looking for another option.

YMCA Military Discount
If you’re on the go, the YMCA offers a military-friendly atmosphere and special discounts for military personnel at clubs nationwide.
Benefits vary by location but often include waiving an enrollment fee and a percentage off monthly dues of typically 10-15%. To find specific details, please contact your local YMCA branch. Be sure to confirm the eligibility criteria for active-duty military, veterans, and families.

In addition to gym membership options, the YMCA also offers respite childcare for military children from infancy to age 12.
The YMCA has supported military families across the country through its 2,400 Armed Services YMCA locations, which are conveniently located on or near military installations.
Gold’s Gym Military Discount
Gold’s Gym does not have a standardized military discount. Individual franchises offer it and can change over time.
Depending on the location and overhead costs, this may result in a discount of up to 20%, plus reduced enrollment fees.

YouFit Military Discount
YouFit, a smaller, regional brand primarily found in the Southern United States, features 100+ locations and offers affordable pricing with a variety of individual and family plans.
It offers a military and first responder discount of up to 20% with no contracts and possibly waived sign-up fees. However, specific details and the exact discount can vary by location and promotion.

Crunch Fitness Military Discount
Crunch Fitness has approximately 450 locations nationwide, offering a casual atmosphere that provides a more relaxed workout environment, along with group classes and one-on-one instruction.
Like many other fitness chains, Crunch Fitness military discounts appear to vary by location. Some offer waiving enrollment fees and a discount on monthly dues. Other locations may not offer any discounts for military members.

CrossFit Military Discount
There isn’t a universal CrossFit military discount. However, individual CrossFit gyms and training courses may offer discounts, with eligibility and amounts varying by location.
Contact your nearest CrossFit location to inquire about possible discounts.

The U.S. Army may cover the cost of courses through Army IgnitED or Army Credentialing Assistance for eligible enlisted personnel, warrant officers, and officers.

The Active&Fit Direct Program Gives Members Access to 23,000+ Locations
An Active&Fit Direct membership is a perfect option for service members who frequently deploy, travel on orders, and for active or retired veterans traveling for business or pleasure.
It is offered exclusively through hundreds of health plans, employers, and other organizations. Membership is $28/month and includes a gym membership to your choice of 12,700+ standard gyms and/or 9,800+ premium exercise studios with 20% – 70% discounts on most.
Fees may vary depending on the selected fitness center. When you enroll, you’ll pay the enrollment fee, as well as the monthly fees for the current and second month of enrollment, plus any applicable taxes.
After enrolling, you will have access to digital resources and classes on ActiveandFitDirect.com
as well as more than 14,000 workout classes available anytime on YouTube and Facebook.
You can track activity through the Active&Fit Direct Connected!, a tool that aggregates data from over 250 wearable fitness trackers and apps.
One-on-one well-being coaching is available to address topics such as fitness, nutrition, stress, sleep, and more. Once enrolled, you can also enroll your spouse or domestic partner.
You can also save on multiple gym memberships. Many gyms will have significant discounts off the retail price for your first gym membership, and you may receive a $5 monthly discount on each additional membership.
There are no long-term contracts, and you can cancel at any time with ease.

What About Planet Fitness and LA Fitness?
Planet Fitness doesn’t offer a military discount, but it’s a highly affordable gym with a huge national presence. A nationwide network of over 2,000 locations provides a $10 monthly membership.
It’s cheaper than most other gyms, even after military discounts. Planet Fitness’s month-to-month membership flexibility is also ideal for military members who frequently move or deploy.
LA Fitness is another large fitness chain that does not appear to offer military discounts.
How to Get Out of a Gym Membership
The military lifestyle is unpredictable, and in many cases, you will need to uproot and relocate to your next destination on short notice.
Most gyms allow for month-to-month, no-obligation contracts that limit service members’ liability. Before signing up with a particular gym, ask them to point out the military clause in their contract so you can review it before you sign.
The federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act does not cover gym memberships. However, some states – including Alaska, Connecticut, Indiana, Nebraska, and South Carolina – have expanded the law to allow active-duty, reserve, and National Guard military members to opt out of gym contracts due to deployment or relocation orders.
Those that offer this option also enable service members to restart their old contract terms and rates upon return.
