Carhartt History

Carhartt was founded in Detroit in 1889 when Hamilton Carhartt set out to make rugged work clothes for manual laborers. In its early days, the company made do with just two sewing machines and five employees. Now, it employs more than 4,000 people.

True to its humble origins, the company’s first motto was “Honest value for an honest dollar.”

Initially, the brand focused on producing clothing for railroad workers who needed something durable, warm and lasting. To meet that goal, Carhartt worked hand-in-hand with railroad workers to make sure his products fit their needs. By 1909, they had locations in nine cities, including in the U.K. and Canada.

More than 100 years later, the brand’s commitment to quality remains the same. All of Carhartt’s apparel is sewn with heavy-duty thread and features reinforced rivets at stress points.

The company is still family-owned by descendants of its founder.
